No more heroes...
Currently fascinated with the new Discovery channel mini-series “When We Left Earth”. The footage is fantastic and there are so many interesting stories I never knew about. The one thing that hit me the most though is how much the nation embraced the astronauts as heroes, which they were. The risks they took were unbelievable, basically strapping themselves to military grade rockets, stepping out into space for the first time with nothing but a thin tether connecting them to their spacecraft, and landing on the moon. America watched each launch with a passion that we no longer have and ticker tape parades were the norm for when they returned, but not anymore. I wonder why? We still have astronauts and they still go into space but the romance of it all has somehow been lost. Are we so connected and inundated now with news and media that we’ve somehow lost focus on real achievements? But more importantly where and who are our heroes today?
